In a shocking murder case, the body of a 22-year-old youth who had been missing for four days was recovered from beneath a dump in Jalandhar Cantonment on Friday i.e. 26 June 2026. Police have arrested the victim's friend, who allegedly confessed to killing him and burying his body under the debris. Investigators are now probing the motive behind the murder and whether more people were involved in the crime.
Identification of the Victim
The deceased has been identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Noni alias Lali, a resident of Ward No. 15 in Jalandhar Cantonment. While talking to the police officials handling the case, it was informed that according to the family of the victim, Gurpreet had left home on June 22, telling them that he was going for a haircut. However, he never returned repeated attempts to contact him failed as his mobile phone had been switched off. Family members alleged that Gurpreet had gone to meet his friend Ravi. The accused worked at a dumping ground in the Cantonment area. When Gurpreet remained untraceable, the family searched for him on their own before lodging a missing person
Police Investigation
During the investigation, police traced Gurpreet's motorcycle near the Beas rivulet close to Kukkar village, but there was no sign of the missing youth. As the investigation progressed, police registered a kidnapping case and formed multiple teams to trace him. Officials said human intelligence played a crucial role in identifying the prime suspect. Acting on the leads, police detained Ravi, a resident of Ludhiana, who had been working as a JCB operator at the dumping site under contractor Baljit Singh for the past seven to eight years. During sustained interrogation, Ravi allegedly confessed to murdering Gurpreet and burying his body beneath the dump. Based on his confession , police recovered the victim's body from the site. A senior police official said the recovery was made after the accused pointed out the exact location where the body had been dumped. The body has been sent for a post-mortem to examine the exact cause of death, while forensic evidence is also being collected from the scene.
Claims by the family
The victim's family has expressed grief and demanded strict punishment for everyone involved. They alleged that Ravi could not have committed the crime alone and claimed that other accused were also involved in the murder. The family has urged police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice. Police said the motive behind the murder is yet to be established and will become clearer after further questioning of the accused. Investigators are also examining whether anyone else assisted Ravi in committing the crime or disposing of the body. Further investigation into the case is underway.
