The Punjab monsoon rainfall has been most disastrous in the last 37 years. This year Punjab has witnessed a major flood havoc in the city. The rains of the 2025 monsoon have halted the Jalandhar, as well with numerous highways and big roads in the city turning into waterlogged pots as a result of excessive water-logging in the low lying areas. Within hours of heavy rains, city roads, especially those in prime areas, were transformed into water pools, leaving commuters stranded and daily life disrupted.
The infamous Damoria Underpass was one of the most affected, compelled to close down entirely after being inundated. Major arterial and residential roads such as Model Town, Jawahar Nagar, New Jawahar Nagar, Lamba Pind Chowk, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, Surya Enclave, Focal Point, Industrial area, Maksuda roadand the affluent 120 Feet Road suffered incessant flooding. The business centers like Workshop Chowk and Nakodar Chowk witnessed shutters being pulled down in shops as water reached business doorsteps, making shopkeepers impotent.
Residents and businessmen vented their anger at the lack of preparation by the administration to face the monsoon, citing that the flooding is a regular occurrence. Huge potholes, most of which were created by unfinished pipeline and sewerage works, aggravated the situation, making roads killing traps for drivers, with many breakdowns on the road being reported regularly.
The Municipal Corporation accepted the grim situation but justified its quick action wherever possible, pointing out the fresh stormwater disposal system laid down on 120 Feet Road that facilitated water clearing in a quick time this year. Lack of emergency response during peak floods and pre-monsoon road repairs, however, were roundly criticized.
Residents are in distress, with traffic disruptions at areas. The chronic water crisis highlights the need of maintenance of the drainage system, which has reached over fifty years old in much of the city.
