

Charge Officer-cum-Tehsildar, Jalandhar-2 has issued a show cause notice to certain employees for allegedly remaining absent from Census 2027 duty and the notice states that the employees did not take their Census related responsibilities seriously and remained absent from duty without approval.
According to the notice the absence of these employees has significantly affected ongoing work related to Census 2027 and stated that instructions had already been issued directing the concerned employees not to attend their schools and that their salaries should not be released without permission of undersigned officer however despite these instructions the employees had not reported to the office till date of the notice.
The notice refers to an earlier office letter numbered 153 dated May 26, 2026 which directs the concerned employees to appear before office of undersigned officer on May 30, 2026 at 9:00 AM and they were also instructed to submit an explanation regarding their absence from Census duty.
The office has warned that if the employees fail to appear with their explanation further action may be initiated against them under Section 11(1)(a) of Census Act, 1948 and as mentioned in the notice Section 11(1)(a) of the Census Act applies when an enumerator or any person who is legally required to assist in Census work refuses to perform their duty.
The provision allows for legal action against such individuals.
The notice further states that under this section refusal to perform Census duty may attract a penalty and the punishment can include a fine of up to ₹1,000, imprisonment for up to three years or both and along with this the office said that the employees must report and provide their explanation so that the important government work related to Census 2027 can be completed on time.
