In a major security breakthrough central intelligence agencies along with Kapurthala Police have arrested two men accused of spying for Pakistan and sharing sensitive information related to the Indian Army.

Ferozepur residents held

The accused have been identified as Sona (26) and Sandeep Singh alias Sonu (29) both residents of Ferozepur district and police said the two were working for Pakistan’s intelligence agency the Inter-Services Intelligence.

According to officials the arrests were made during a joint operation based on a tip-off and two more people already lodged in jail have also been brought on production warrants for questioning in the same case.

In touch with Pakistan

During the search police recovered one SIM-based CCTV camera, four mobile phones and a Wi-Fi router along with Pakistani phone numbers that were also found in the devices.

Investigation revealed that the accused had rented a shop in Model Town Kapurthala in the name of Sona’s wife about a month ago and from there they installed SIM-based CCTV cameras on electricity poles near an area close to the Army cantonment and these cameras were used to monitor and send live footage of Army movements to Pakistan.

Had access to the live camera feed

During questioning Sona admitted that both accused, along with a Pakistan-based handler known as “Fauji” and the police said the handler sent ₹35,000 through an unknown person to support their activities. It also came out that Sandeep had paid ₹50,000 to receive some material sent via drone from across the border and the accused were in regular contact with the handler through internet calls.

Passed sensitive information to Pakistan

Police further said that their connection with the Pakistani agent was arranged through an inmate lodged in Central Jail Barnala and that inmate is now being questioned in this case while officials believe the entire operation was aimed at harming the country’s unity and security by passing sensitive information to Pakistan.

Further probe on

The accused were produced in court and the police have taken them on four-day remand for further investigation while senior officials including SSP Gaurav Toora and AIG Counter-Intelligence Simran Dhindsa confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and more links may come out soon.
