Newly appointed Punjab Congress president Pargat Singh and Congress Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot on Thursday visited Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar along with senior party leaders and workers. The leaders paid obeisance at the Golden Temple and sought the blessings of Guru Sahib.

The visit comes shortly after Pargat Singh was appointed as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. The Congress leadership is seeking to project unity within the state unit as the party prepares for the upcoming political battle in Punjab.

Pargat Singh says focus is on seeking blessings

Speaking to reporters after paying obeisance, Pargat Singh said he and the party leaders had come to the holy shrine to express gratitude and seek the blessings of Guru Sahib.

He said the visit was not meant for political discussions and that the leaders had come as humble devotees. Pargat Singh also said that Congress had neither followed the politics of hatred nor the politics of confrontation.

‘Politics will be discussed after a day or two’

When questioned about the party’s political strategy and future plans, Pargat Singh said political issues would be discussed later. He said that it was not appropriate to talk about politics at the holy shrine and that the party’s political activities would be discussed after a day or two.

Calling himself a “Nimana Sikh”, Pargat Singh said he had come to the Guru Ghar to seek blessings and express gratitude.

Congress leaders stress unity

On questions regarding unity within the Punjab Congress, Pargat Singh said all party leaders and workers were united. The visit by Pargat Singh and Sachin Pilot, accompanied by other senior leaders, also highlighted the party’s attempt to present a united front.

The Congress delegation is also scheduled to visit other religious places in Amritsar during the day, including the Durgiana Mandir, St Paul Church and Ram Tirath.

Pargat Singh is scheduled to formally take charge as Punjab Congress president on October 11 at Punjab Congress Bhavan in Chandigarh.
