Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Jalandhar on July 17, where he is expected to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of several major railway and road infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity and boosting development in Punjab. The visit will mark the Prime Minister’s second trip to Jalandhar in less than five months, reflecting the city’s growing importance in the Centre’s development agenda. The Prime Minister is scheduled to dedicate projects worth over ₹5,470 crore during the visit.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the projects cover railway station redevelopment, a new railway line, National Highway expansion and a new train service connecting Punjab with Uttar Pradesh. These initiatives are expected to improve passenger convenience, reduce travel time and strengthen the state’s transport infrastructure.
Here’s What Punjab Is Expected to Get
1. Redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station
Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. He will also dedicate 75 redeveloped railway stations across 20 states, including five stations in Punjab. These stations have been modernised with improved passenger amenities, better accessibility, upgraded waiting areas and enhanced facilities.
2. Daulatpur Chowk–Kartoli Railway Line
The Prime Minister will inaugurate the Daulatpur Chowk–Kartoli railway line, constructed at a cost of around ₹830 crore as part of the Nangal Dam–Talwara rail corridor. The new railway line is expected to improve connectivity between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh while boosting economic and tourism activities in the region.
3. Shri Guru Ravidas Ji Maharaj Express
One of the biggest highlights of the visit will be the flagging off of the Shri Guru Ravidas Ji Maharaj Express, connecting Chheharta (Amritsar) with Varanasi. The train is expected to provide direct rail connectivity for devotees travelling to the birthplace of Guru Ravidas and promote religious tourism.
4. National Highway Projects
Prime Minister Modi will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for major National Highway projects worth over ₹3,070 crore, including:
* 30.9-km Package-6 of the Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway
* 10.3-km PR-7 Spur of the Ambala–Chandigarh Greenfield Highway (NH-205A)
These projects are expected to reduce travel time, improve freight movement and strengthen road connectivity across Punjab.

Security Tightened Ahead of PM’s Visit
Ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival, Jalandhar has been placed under extensive security. The Special Protection Group (SPG), Punjab Police and central security agencies have intensified anti-sabotage checks, CCTV surveillance, drone monitoring and route rehearsals. Senior officials have been reviewing security and traffic arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the high-profile visit.

It will be his second visit to Jalandhar in less than five months, following his February visit to Dera Sachkhand Ballan on Guru Ravidas Jayanti. The city also serves as the gateway to the politically crucial Doaba region, which has 23 Assembly constituencies, the highest concentration of Scheduled Caste population in the state, and is home to the influential Dera Sachkhand Ballan, one of the most prominent religious centres of the Ravidassia community.
Political analysts believe the combination of major infrastructure investments, community-focused initiatives such as the Shri Guru Ravidas Ji Maharaj Express, and the Prime Minister’s repeated visits reflects the Centre’s dual strategy of accelerating development while strengthening public outreach in one of Punjab’s most strategically important regions.
