Jalandhar could witness a major change in its hospital landscape as private entities are reportedly exploring the acquisition of some of the city's leading hospitals.
According to sources, one well-known multi-speciality hospital with more than 200 beds is said to be among the key hospitals being considered for a possible acquisition and the hospital has an established reputation in the region, although it has also been involved in legal proceedings in recent years. Sources further claim that discussions are also taking place with two other hospitals, including one that has previously been in the spotlight over controversies and another with no major public controversies.
Most of the interest, sources say, is focused on hospitals with a capacity of more than 100 beds.
Sources said the discussions are confidential, and no official announcement has been made by any of the parties involved and at present, the talks remain exploratory, and it is not yet clear whether they will result in a final deal, but if the acquisitions go ahead, ownership and management of the concerned hospitals could change in the future, however, there is no confirmation at this stage regarding the timeline, terms of the discussions, or the nature of the proposed agreements.
This is not the first major hospital acquisition in Jalandhar, as earlier, Fortis Healthcare had announced the acquisition of the 228-bed Shrimann Superspecialty Hospital through a slump sale for Rs 462 crore in an all-cash deal. The announced acquisition cost excluded stamp duty and other regulatory expenses and was subject to customary closing adjustments as per the definitive agreements.
Such acquisitions are often part of expansion plans by private entities looking to strengthen their presence in different cities by taking over established institutions instead of setting up new ones and as of now, there is no official confirmation on which hospitals are part of the discussions. Since the talks are still ongoing, residents and patients are unlikely to see any immediate impact and more clarity is expected only after the concerned parties issue an official statement or confirm any agreement and until then, the discussions remain at the negotiation stage, according to sources.
Sources also say that Jalandhar's position as a major medical hub, along with the presence of a large NRI population that frequently seeks treatment in the city, has made its established hospitals attractive for private entities looking to expand their presence.
