The ongoing leadership tussle in the Punjab Congress has entered a new phase after a series of meetings in Delhi between senior Punjab leaders and the party's central leadership, although several leaders met All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal, there was no indication of any immediate change in the Punjab Congress leadership.
The meetings came at a time when differences within the Punjab Congress have become public, with former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi emerging as one of the strongest voices seeking a change in the state leadership.
According to sources, Channi did not meet Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during his visit to Delhi as Rahul Gandhi, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, reportedly chose not to meet him amid the ongoing internal conflict in the Punjab Congress.
K.C. Venugopal held separate meetings with Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Rana Gurjeet Singh, Vijay Inder Singla and Pargat Singh. Before meeting Venugopal, Channi and Randhawa also met AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala.
During his meeting, Channi reportedly told Venugopal that Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring had failed to keep the party united, also expressed concern that continuing with the current leadership until the Punjab Assembly elections could make the party's electoral battle more difficult.
After hearing all the leaders, Venugopal is learnt to have expressed disappointment over the growing factionalism in the Punjab Congress and sources said he told the leaders that the party high command would carefully discuss all the issues raised before taking any decision.
The leaders were also reportedly told that the Congress high command was unhappy that internal differences had become public through media reports and they were asked to respect the authority of the party leadership and wait patiently for its final decision.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting at Indira Bhawan, Channi tried to present a united picture of the party, he also said all Congress leaders remained committed to the party and would accept whatever decision the high command takes.
He said the leaders had shared their concerns with the central leadership, which listened to them patiently, however, he made it clear that the final decision rests entirely with the Congress high command.
Channi also reaffirmed his faith in Rahul Gandhi's leadership and said neither he nor his supporters wanted to embarrass the party and that their only aim was to strengthen the Congress in Punjab, he added that all leaders were committed to the party and would follow the party's direction.
Despite the meetings, sources said the Congress high command is not inclined to replace Raja Warring as the Punjab Congress president before the Assembly elections and according to sources, Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and AICC general secretary in-charge of Punjab Bhupesh Baghel believe that changing the state president under pressure would send the wrong message.
The leadership is also said to be considering the existing caste balance in Punjab. Raja Warring is a prominent Jat Sikh leader, while Channi is the Congress party's most prominent Dalit face in the state.
Even as Channi continues to play an important role in Punjab Congress politics, he now faces several major challenges.
1. Keeping his camp united
One of Channi's biggest challenges is to keep his supporters together, since the Congress lost the previous Assembly election, he has had to work hard to maintain his position within the party and if his supporters lose confidence or move away, his influence inside the Congress could weaken.
2. Winning the confidence of the High Command
After meeting K.C. Venugopal, Channi now has the task of convincing the central leadership that he remains an important leader for the Congress in Punjab so he needs to show that his leadership and his support among Dalit voters can help the party perform better in future elections.
3. Managing organisational politics
Another challenge is dealing with the strong organisational control of Punjab Congress chief Raja Warring, since Warring currently heads the state unit, Channi will have to ensure that his supporters remain politically relevant and are not sidelined during future organisational decisions, including ticket distribution.
4. Rebuilding his political image
Channi also faces the challenge of rebuilding his public image after the Congress suffered a heavy defeat in the last Punjab Assembly election, political observers believe he now needs to strengthen his image not just as the leader of one faction but as a leader who can represent the entire state and unite different sections of the party.
For now, the Congress high command has not announced any leadership change in Punjab and the central leadership has asked all leaders to maintain unity and avoid public disagreements while it considers the issues raised during the Delhi meetings.
