Amritsar: A Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was shot dead by unidentified attackers in Punjab’s Majitha area early Sunday morning while he was on his way to duty.
The deceased officer has been identified as ASI Joga Singh, who was posted in the traffic police department in Amritsar. According to police officials, the attackers arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at the officer near Majitha, around one kilometre before the town limits.
How the Attack Took Place
Police said ASI Joga Singh, a resident of village Ghaniye in Gurdaspur’s Bangar area, had left his home around 6 am on his scooter (PB06BJ-6614) to report for duty in Amritsar.
During the journey, two unidentified assailants intercepted his scooter and fired multiple shots at him. The ASI sustained two bullet injuries — one on the left side of his chest and another near his waist.
He was critically injured and succumbed to his injuries at the spot before help could arrive.
SSP Reaches Spot, Investigation Intensified
Senior police officials, including SSP Sohail Mir, DSP Kamalmeet Singh and SHO Karam Pal Singh, rushed to the scene after receiving information about the incident.
The entire area was cordoned off, and forensic experts were called to collect evidence from the crime scene. Police teams recovered empty bullet shells from the spot and have started examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the attackers and trace their movement.
SSP Sohail Mir said police received information regarding the body of a police official lying on the Fatehgarh Churian-Majitha road. After inspection, bullet injury marks were found on the body, following which it was shifted to the Civil Hospital for further procedures.
All Angles Under Probe
SSP Sohail Mir stated that investigators are examining every possible angle, including personal rivalry, road rage or any other motive behind the murder.
Police officials also revealed that the deceased officer had not received any threats in the past. Joga Singh lived with his wife, while his two children are settled in Canada. According to the police, he did not have any known dispute with anyone
Previous Incident
The incident comes months after the killing of two policemen at Adiyan police post in Gurdaspur, located close to the India-Pakistan international border.
A terror outfit calling itself Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan had claimed responsibility for that attack through an online post, warning of further attacks on Indian security personnel.
