Online cab aggregators like OLA, Uber, Rapido, Bla Bla, etc will soon have to follow certain rules in Punjab. Online cab services have become one of the major lifelines for travellers in Punjab and other states of Punjab. However, during rush hours, especially after 5 pm in the evening, fares start to surge. Hence, travellers end up paying more than the actual fare.
In order to keep these cab aggregators under a certain framework, Punjab Government is currently making a proposal that all these online service companies will have to strictly follow.
Varun Roojam, Administrative Secretary in Transport Department & Resident Commissioner (Punjab Bhawan), informed True Scoop that currently a proposal is being made to bring uniformity in Punjab in cab aggregator sector. Roojam further informed that within a month or two the proposal will be sent to Punjab Cabinet for approval. Once approved, cab aggregators will have to follow the rules.
"We are framing rules for aggregators providing cab services, including both 2- and 4-wheeler vehicles. Such rules already exist in major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai. During peak hours, especially after 5 pm, these companies start charging double. For example, for a ride that normally costs Rs 250, travellers end up paying Rs 500."
"The new rules will bring uniformity across Punjab. They will also define working hours for drivers and include strong provisions for passenger safety, especially for women. The proposal is being prepared and will come into effect within a month or two after Cabinet's approval."
