Punjab is witnessing a new agricultural revolution as the state’s youth embrace farming with modern techniques and government support. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab government initiatives and farmer-friendly policies are helping young professionals transform agriculture into a profitable career.
Over 1,200 youth have now become successful ‘agri-businessmen,’ with polyhouse farming generating earnings of ₹12–14 lakh per year, backed by a 50% subsidy.
Engineer-turned-farmer Harbir Singh from Sarabha village in Ludhiana district exemplifies this trend. Choosing agriculture over a lucrative engineering career, he has set up polyhouses and is reaping remarkable profits while inspiring others to follow his path.
His success story highlights how modern techniques combined with government guidance are transforming Punjab’s farming landscape.
Under the direction of Punjab Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat, the Horticulture Department is actively promoting crop diversification and increasing farmers’ incomes.
Smt. Shailender Kaur, Director of Horticulture, stated that young farmers like Harbir are blending traditional practices with advanced technology to set new benchmarks in agriculture.
Harbir Singh shared that he received extensive training and information on polyhouse farming from the Horticulture Department. Today, he cultivates seedless cucumber, coloured capsicum, muskmelon, potato, and fenugreek under polyhouse conditions, earning an average annual profit of ₹12–14 lakh.
He also credited his success to training received in 2014 from the Centre of Excellence (Vegetables) in Kartarpur and the subsidy support under the National Horticulture Mission. Regular guidance from Horticulture Department officials and his own dedication have been key factors in achieving consistent results.
The Punjab government’s farmer-friendly schemes are proving transformative, demonstrating that the combination of modern technology, hard work, and policy support under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann can create sustainable prosperity for Punjab’s farmers.
