The film Satluj, earlier titled Punjab '95, is based on the life of Sikh human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra and the biographical crime-drama follows his fight to expose illegal killings and secret cremations in Punjab during the militancy period. The film recently became a major topic of discussion after its release and while some characters are directly based on real people, others appear to be fictional or inspired by historical events, some viewers have also started drawing comparisons between a few film characters and former Punjab Police officers however, these similarities have not been officially confirmed by the filmmakers.

Here is a look at the reel vs real characters in Satluj.

Diljit Dosanjh plays Jaswant Singh Khalra

Diljit Dosanjh plays Jaswant Singh Khalra, whose character is based on the real-life activist and in reality, Khalra was a bank clerk from Amritsar who later became a human rights campaigner and he investigated alleged secret cremations carried out during the militancy period and documented around 25,000 cases of unlawful cremations, later in September 1995, he was abducted, tortured and murdered. His work later led to a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, which found evidence of illegal cremations in Punjab and in the film, Diljit portrays Khalra's journey from an ordinary man to a fearless activist fighting for justice.

Geetika Vidya Ohlyan plays Paramjit Kaur Khalra

Geetika Vidya Ohlyan plays Paramjit Kaur Khalra, Jaswant Singh Khalra's wife. In real life, she continued a long legal battle after her husband's disappearance and her efforts eventually helped bring several police officers to justice in 2007. The film highlights her courage, determination and support for her husband during difficult times. 

Arjun Rampal plays a CBI officer

Arjun Rampal plays a CBI officer investigating the case and the character represents the official investigation that followed Khalra's disappearance while in real life, the CBI conducted the inquiry into both the alleged illegal cremations and Khalra's abduction, leading to convictions in the case.

Suvinder Vicky plays SSP Surjit Singh Sugga

Suvinder Vicky plays SSP Surjit Singh Sugga, one of the film's most talked-about characters and he filmmakers have not officially revealed whether the character is based on any real person however, many viewers believe the role may have been inspired by former Punjab Police SSP Ajit Singh Sandhu, who was investigated in connection with Khalra's abduction and murder however this remains speculation, as there has been no official confirmation. 

DGP Inderpal Singh Bitta & KPS Gill

Another character creating discussion is DGP Inderpal Singh Bitta and any viewers have pointed out similarities between the character and former Punjab Director General of Police K.P.S. Gill, who led the Punjab Police during much of the militancy period and the comparisons are mainly based on the character's senior police position, leadership role and the time period shown in the film however, there is no official confirmation that DGP Inderpal Singh Bitta is based on K.P.S. Gill or any other former Punjab Police chief and the filmmakers have not identified the real-life inspiration for the character, and the film's credits also do not mention any such connection.
