The release of Diljit Dosanjh’s Satluj (formerly Punjab ‘95’) has sparked widespread interest in the real-life personalities believed to have inspired its fictional characters. While the film is based on the life and struggle of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, several characters have been given fictional names.
One of the key characters in the film is DGP Inderpal Singh Bitta, portrayed by veteran actor Kanwaljit Singh. The character is presented as the senior-most police officer overseeing the law enforcement machinery during Punjab’s militancy era.
Following the film’s release, many viewers have speculated that DGP Inderpal Singh Bitta bears similarities to former Punjab Director General of Police K.P.S. Gill, who led the Punjab Police during much of the militancy period. The similarities cited by viewers include the character’s senior position, leadership role within the police force and the historical period in which the story is set.
However, there is no official confirmation from the filmmakers that DGP Inderpal Singh Bitta is based on K.P.S. Gill or any other specific former Punjab Police chief. Neither the film’s credits nor its makers have identified the real-life inspiration behind this character.
By contrast, another senior police character in the film, SSP Surjit Singh Sugga, played by Suvinder Vicky, is widely believed to be inspired by former Punjab Police SSP Ajit Singh Sandhu, who was named as an accused during the CBI investigation into the abduction and murder of Jaswant Singh Khalra.
Like many films inspired by true events, Satluj changes names and fictionalises certain characters and events for cinematic purposes. While some on-screen roles have widely accepted real-life counterparts, others—including DGP Inderpal Singh Bitta—remain officially unidentified. Until the filmmakers provide confirmation, any comparison between the DGP character and a former Punjab DGP should be regarded as public speculation rather than an established fact.
