A tragic railway accident near DAV Heart Railway Station in Jalandhar claimed the life of a 32-year-old man after he was hit by a moving train on Friday. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed near the railway tracks, which are now being examined as part of the investigation.
Identification of the deceased
The deceased has been identified as Sukhwinder Kumar alias Tinku, son of Vachanlal, a resident of Vijaypur, Jammu. He was around 32-33 years old and had been living in Jalandhar for the past four years. Sukhwinder worked as a vegetable vendor at a local shop and was known among his colleagues as a hardworking and responsible person.
Series of events
According to the information available, Sukhwinder had left his workplace in the evening after completing his daily work. His employer, Saurabh, said that Tinku left the vegetable shop at around 5:30 pm and started walking towards his home. While passing near the DAV Heart railway lines, he reportedly received a phone call and continued walking while talking on the phone.
Meanwhile, a train approached from the opposite direction. People present near the railway track noticed the situation and tried to warn him by shouting, but Sukhwinder allegedly failed to hear their voices. Within moments, he came under the train and suffered fatal injuries. He died on the spot due to the impact.
Statements by the employer
Speaking about the incident, Saurabh said that Sukhwinder had been working at his shop for nearly four years and was a dedicated employee. He described him as a responsible person and denied any possibility that he was mentally disturbed or had taken any extreme step due to stress. He added that information about the accident had been shared with Sukhwinder’s village residents and his labour community.
Family members informed that Sukhwinder had gone to a nearby medical shop before the incident; however, police officials did not find any receipt related to the visit during the initial investigation.
Police investigation
After receiving information through the control room, the Government Railway Police (GRP) reached the spot and started the investigation. Head Constable Pritpal Singh said that the police team took the body into custody and shifted it to the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, for post-mortem examination.
Police officials said that further action will be taken after recording statements from the family members. The CCTV footage of the incident is also being reviewed to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the accident.
