A major clash erupted late Friday night inside the Modern Jail in Kapurthala, leaving around three to four undertrial prisoners reportedly injured and triggering a massive police response at the jail premises.
Videos linked to the violent incident inside the jail are rapidly going viral on social media, creating panic and drawing widespread public attention.
According to initial information, the clash broke out between inmates inside the jail late at night. Following the incident, police teams and PCR units from different police stations across Kapurthala were rushed to the spot under the supervision of senior officials to bring the situation under control.
District Police Chief Gaurav Toora confirmed that police had received information regarding the clash inside the jail. He stated that the situation is presently under control and police personnel are performing their duties diligently.
Sources also claimed that one or two barracks inside the jail may have been set on fire during the violence. However, no senior police official has officially confirmed the fire reports so far.
As a precautionary measure, PCR teams were deployed outside the Civil Hospital. However, till around 10:30 PM, no injured prisoner or undertrial had reportedly been shifted there for treatment.
SSP Gaurav Toora admitted that the situation inside the jail remained tense and confirmed that he personally reached the spot to supervise operations and help restore normalcy.
Police teams are currently investigating the entire incident, while further details are awaited.
