A clash broke out at I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU) on the Kapurthala-Jalandhar road on Monday, September 14, after a dispute over a vehicle allegedly escalated into a physical fight involving students and several youths from outside the university.
A video of the incident has surfaced on social media, showing dozens of youths exchanging kicks and punches on a road near the university campus, and the footage appears to have been recorded from a building within the campus. The faces of those involved are not clearly visible in the video.
According to information regarding the incident, the dispute began around 12 noon when a vehicle was allegedly parked in the middle of the path. Navjot, a university student, had reportedly parked his vehicle in the area, while another student, identified as Ankit, was trying to pass through.
When Ankit allegedly asked Navjot to move the vehicle, an argument broke out between the two. The disagreement reportedly escalated into a minor scuffle and following the altercation, Ankit allegedly called some acquaintances from outside the university, these youths then reportedly reached the campus and confronted Navjot and his friends, leading to the larger fight seen in the video.
No serious injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.
The video circulating on social media shows a large group of youths fighting on an open road.
Several people can be seen kicking and punching each other, while others are present around the group and two vehicles are also visible at the location. The dispute is reportedly linked to the movement of vehicles through the area.
There are also claims that one of the youths who came from outside was carrying a sharp-edged weapon, however, according to the information available, security personnel at the university gate stopped the person from entering with the weapon.
The incident has raised questions about how a large group of outsiders allegedly reached the campus and became involved in the altercation.
Following the circulation of the video, questions were raised about the university's security arrangements.
When contacted, the university's PRO said that the management had not received any information about such a clash and he also said that no student had approached the university with a complaint regarding the incident.
Police officials also said that no complaint had been received from either side so far, however, after the video surfaced, police said they would look into the matter and could take suo motu cognizance of the incident and at present, the identities of all the youths seen in the video and the exact circumstances leading to the larger confrontation are yet to be officially established.
