Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is scheduled to kickstart its campaign in Punjab for the Assembly Elections of 2027 on March 14, where the Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to make an appearance.

BJP’s ‘Badlav Rally’ is all set to take place in Moga on March 14 where earlier Chief Minister of Punjab Bhagwant Mann and AAP National convener Arvind Kejriwal had earlier addressed a mega gathering of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

A move to strengthen BJP’s base in Punjab

The March 14 rally is being projected as a big political move by BJP, as it is being seen as a key step in the party’s strategy to strengthen its base in the state. The campaign is expected to mark the beginning of a wider outreach program by the BJP as it prepares to expand its political footprint across Punjab ahead of upcoming elections.

BJP & Akali Dal alliance

The BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) were once among the oldest political allies in the country. The alliance between the two parties lasted for nearly three decades and played a crucial role in Punjab politics. The coalition governed the state for two consecutive terms from 2007 to 2017 under the leadership of Parkash Singh Badal, with the BJP serving as the junior partner in the government.

However, the alliance broke in 2020 during the farmers’ agitation against the three farm laws introduced by the Centre. The Shiromani Akali Dal withdrew from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and severed ties with the BJP, citing concerns over farmers’ interests. Since then, both parties have contested elections separately in Punjab.

Reunion of BJP & SAD

Despite the split, political discussions about a possible reunion between the BJP and Akali Dal have surfaced from time to time. Some leaders within both parties believe that their traditional voter bases, BJP’s support in urban areas and Akali Dal’s influence in rural Sikh-dominated regions, once complemented each other and could still benefit from a partnership.

However, many leaders within the BJP feel that the party should now focus on strengthening its independent political presence in Punjab rather than depending on a regional ally. The party has been working in recent years to expand its organization and attract new leadership in the state.

BJP’s long-term roadmap for Punjab

The upcoming campaign launch by Amit Shah is therefore being viewed as an important political moment that could signal BJP’s long-term roadmap for Punjab, including whether the party intends to contest future elections independently or explore alliance possibilities.

Political observers believe that Shah’s visit on March 14 could provide clearer indications about BJP’s strategy and ambitions in Punjab politics in the coming years.

BJP divided into two factions

Sources reveal that the BJP is currently divided among itself as there are two different factions divided within the party that want to take varied paths. As per inside sources it is being revealed that one part of the party wants to join hands with Aklai Dal while the other faction remains adamant to contest the 2027 Punjab polls solo.

Akali Dal in battle mode

As per reports, the Akali Dal has also come to the realization that BJP-SAD alliance might not be on the cards in the upcoming polls of 2027 which is why they have also sprung into action and stared to expand their base.

Recently, giving a major jolt to BJP, its party leader Arvind Khanna joined Shiromani Akali Dal in the presence of party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal in Sangrur. Arvind Khanna was the vice-president of the Punjab BJP.

SAD’s renewed focus on city centric seats is an indicator that the party is establishing its presence and preparing for a solo fight.
