The political heat around the Gagandeep Singh Randhawa suicide case is now fully centered on one question: will a CBI probe actually happen?
In Lok Sabha today Union Home Minister Amit Shah made it clear that the case belongs to Punjab since law and order is a state subject but he didn’t shut the door there and said that if Punjab MPs give a written request he will get the case transferred to the CBI.
Soon after the Congress MPs Charanjit Singh Channi, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Dharamvir Gandhi acted on it and a formal letter was sent to Amit Shah requesting a CBI investigation calling the case serious and demanding a fair and transparent probe. They also asked for steps like issuing a Look Out Circular against the accused and at the same time political pressure is building from all sides.
Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu supported the idea of a CBI probe and said all parties should come together for justice and Congress, BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal leaders have all questioned the Punjab government and pushed for a central agency probe. Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla also raised the issue in Parliament pointing to the alleged video where Randhawa blamed Laljit Singh Bhullar for harassment before his death and on the other hand Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar claimed that the state moved quickly to arrest Bhullar because there was fear that if the CBI steps in and more details could come out.
It clearly shows that the chances of a CBI probe are strong but no final decision has been announced yet as the Centre has not officially handed over the case to CBI so far but the process has been set in motion.
