A new six-lane bypass and the Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway are reshaping the highways around Jalandhar. The network isn't complete, and it won't open on a single date.
The main project around the city is a 6-lane greenfield bypass of 46.5 km, running from Kahlwan on NH-3 to Kang Sahbu on NH-703 via Sarmastpur, Madara and Khajurla, with Krishna Constructions as contractor. Project records show a start date of 15 January 2023 and a completion date of 30 June 2027. That is a scheduled target rather than a guaranteed opening date.
Package IX of the expressway runs from the Ludhiana–Moga road near Mullanpur Dakha to the Jalandhar–Moga road near Kang Sahibu village, with a completion date of 31 March 2027. Kang Sahbu is also where the bypass ends, so the two projects meet there.
The corridor is not all in the future. In July 2026, the Prime Minister dedicated 157.92 km covering Packages I to V and inaugurated the 30.9-km Package VI in Punjab.
The unfinished links are the main reason Jalandhar can't yet count on the full network.
Packages X and XI were terminated. NHAI terminated Packages 8, 10 and 11 and settled with the contractor. Package 10 covered the Jalandhar–Moga to Jalandhar–Kapurthala section along with Amritsar connectivity. Package 11 runs from Khojewal in Kapurthala to Sri Hargobindpur.
Reasons given. An NHAI official cited land acquisition problems and a fly ash issue involving the state government.
Re-tendering. As of the March 2026 parliamentary status, Package X (39.5 km) and Package XI (43.02 km) had been foreclosed, with fresh bids invited for the balance works. I found no confirmed completion date for either, so none should be assumed.
The Amritsar spurs. Spur-I had its completion date revised from April 2026 to March 2028. Spur-II had its contract terminated and fresh bids invited. Spur-III has an expected completion of February 2027.
The July 2026 PMO release said the completed corridor is expected to eventually bring Delhi–Amritsar travel from about eight hours to four. These are projected times for the whole route, not a guarantee for any particular trip from Jalandhar. Your actual time will depend on your starting point, the interchange you use, which sections are open and where in Delhi you're headed.
Two key pieces near Jalandhar have clear targets: Package IX in March 2027 and the bypass in June 2027. The Kapurthala and Amritsar links are still being re-tendered, and the Amritsar spurs run as far as 2028. The corridor will therefore come together in stages from 2027 onward, with no single opening day.
