With a few days to go when US President Donald Trump's 50% whopping tariff come into effect, demands to boycott American Goods is intensifying in India. Slowly, the boycott US Goods trend has reached to Punjab as well.
India which is the world's most populous nation, is a key market for American brands that have rapidly expanded to target a growing base of affluent consumers, many of whom remain infatuated with international labels seen as symbols of moving up in life.
A few of the famous American goods that are consumed and bought widely in India include soft drinks like Coca-Cola, Sprite, Mountain Dew, McDonald's, KFC, etc.
Notably, India is the biggest market by users for Meta's WhatsApp. Furthermore, Domino's has more restaurants than any other brand in the country. Beverages like Pepsi and Coca-Cola often dominate store shelves, and people still queue up when a new Apple store opens or a Starbucks cafe offer discounts.
With the US tariff slated to be enforced on India from August 27, 2025, boycott American goods has started to intensify.
Lovely Professional University (LPU) Chancellor and AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal on Independence Day 2025 i.e. on Friday, announced that the university will ban American soft drinks in its campus. Rajya Sabha MP Mittal in his video stated that he had written a letter to US President Donald Trump to not slap India with 50% tariff and instead resolve the issue by talks.
However, since Trump seems adamant to impose tariffs on India, LPU will put on on American soft drinks if US tariff will come into effect.
