Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from his post on Saturday, announcing his decision through a post on social media platform X and the resignation came just hours before the third round of talks between the Central government and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
The development took place as police used tear gas to disperse protesters in Delhi and leaders of the protest are scheduled to hold another round of discussions with Union ministers later in the day.
Pradhan's resignation had been one of the key demands of the protesters, who have been camping at Delhi's Jantar Mantar for more than a month where the protesters have been seeking accountability and reforms in the country's examination system.
The Central government has not yet announced a successor to Dharmendra Pradhan and an official statement regarding the appointment of the next Union Education Minister is still awaited.
The resignation is expected to be a major point of discussion during the upcoming meeting between the Centre and CJP leaders as it comes at a time when negotiations are continuing over the demands raised by the protesters.
