A major fire broke out around midnight on Sunday in the well-known Sindhi Sweets outlet in the main shopping area of Chandigarh’s Sector-17. But fortunately, no one was injured as the outlet was already closed when the fire engulfed the place.
The warning was raised after the night guard noticed dense smoke emerging from the building. This prompted an immediate call for the fire department as well as the police from Sector-17. A few minutes later, several fire engines were seen rushing towards the building with their hoses wide open.
The police cordoned the entire area - keeping the public safe outside, allowing them not to enter in the smouldering property. Firemen and police could get close, but no one else. Employees of Sindhi Sweets were waiting in the background, told to keep out until things quieted down.
Firemen struggled with flames for nearly two hours. Yet when the final ember was extinguished, most of the merchandise and walls in the store were nothing but charred remains - costs added up quickly. On the bright side, no one was injured; the business was empty and locked up; otherwise, a disaster was averted.
Initial investigations by the fire department suggest a possible short circuit causing the fire. Meanwhile, the police and fire department are connecting the dots, investigating what actually triggered it, while also seeing if safety precautions were in place.
The authorities confirmed that the Fire had been boxed in, with no harm to neighboring commercial businesses, avoiding possible escalation. Following the all-clear, the Fire-blocked area reopened approximately past dawn on Monday.
Police officers in Sector-17 are digging deep into what transpired while also verifying all the nearby fire safety measures to ensure such an incident does not occur in the future.
