Government of India has announced revised passport application fees which will come into effect from July 1 and the new charges apply to fresh passport applications, passport reissues, Tatkal services and several other passport-related services and the revised fee structure has been notified through Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026, with the new rules coming into force people applying for a passport or renewing an existing one will have to pay higher charges than before.
A passport is an important travel document for anyone planning to travel abroad and whether a person is travelling for tourism, studies, work or any other purpose a valid passport is required before applying for a visa in most countries. The new fees are as follows:
Apart from fresh passports and reissues government has also revised charges for replacing lost or damaged passports and certain other passport-related services and the increase in passport fees may not make a major difference for people already planning expensive international trips however it can have a bigger impact on families or people applying for multiple passports at the same time.
For example if a family of four applying for new 36 page ordinary passports they will now have to pay ₹10,000 in application fees and under the revised rates this is ₹4,000 more than what they would have paid earlier so if they require urgent passport processing through the Tatkal service the total cost will increase even further.
People whose passports are close to expiry are advised to renew them well before planning an overseas trip and applying early can help avoid last minute problems and reduce the need to use more expensive Tatkal service.
Many countries require travellers to have a passport that remains valid for at least six months from the date of travel or visa application and in some cases airlines may also refuse boarding if the passport does not meet the required validity period and because of this checking passport validity should be one of the first steps while planning an international trip. Applicants can choose between a 36 page passport and a 60 page passport based on how often they travel.
A 36 page passport is generally suitable for people who travel internationally only once in a few years or take occasional foreign trips while on the other hand people who travel abroad frequently may find 60 page passport more useful. The additional pages provide more space for visas and immigration stamps reducing the need to apply for a passport reissue due to filled pages.
Before applying for a passport or renewing an existing one applicants should keep a few important points in mind, they should check their passport's expiry date at least six months before any planned international travel and they should also choose passport booklet size according to how often they travel along with this applying well in advance instead of depending on Tatkal service can help save money and avoid unnecessary delays.
The revised passport fees will be applicable from July 1 and all applications submitted on or after that date will be processed according to new fee structure notified by Government of India.
