A long weekend is around the corner for students, government and bank officials as the government has announced a gazetted holiday on Monday, May 12, 2025 - on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. 

According to the government holiday calendar released by the central government, schools, colleges, banks, and other institutions across India will remain closed on the upcoming Monday (May 12). 

What is expected to be closed?

The government of India has declared Buddha Purnima as a gazetted holiday, which implies that offices, schools, and other institutions in most of the state will remain closed. 

Schools: All schools and other educational institutions remain closed for the gazetted holiday. 

Post Offices: Post offices are considered to be government offices, and because of this, they remain closed on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. 

Banks: Banks will also remain closed on May 12. However, different states have their own list of holidays, under which the banks might remain open in those respective states that have not declared Buddha Purnima as a gazetted holiday.

It is expected that people will be enjoying the long weekend for the week commencing on May 5, 2025. 

Saturday, May 10 - Due to the second Saturday, schools, banks, and other public or private institutions are expected to remain closed on May 10.

Monday, May 12 - It is expected that the government and private institutions across the majority of the Indian states due to Buddha Purnima.
