Virat Kohli, who had previously stated that he will not be captaining India in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) after the T20 World Cup, delivered yet another bombshell on Sunday night. In an emotional video sent to the franchise's social media accounts, the 32-year-old announced that he will stand down as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore after IPL 2021. Kohli, on the other hand, has stated that he will remain "an RCB player till I play my last IPL game." The news of Kohli's retirement shook the cricketing world.

Virat Kohli is the first name that comes to mind when discussing the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021). The ace batsman has been a part of the club from its establishment in 2008 and has gone on to become a legendary character in the league's history. Since taking over as captain in the middle of the 2012 season, Kohli has been the face and leader of RCB. In T20 cricket, he has served as an ambassador for the franchise. But Kohli has not been able to lift the IPL trophy despite his heartfelt efforts on the field with the bat either as a player or captain.

Kohli's announcement left RCB supporters heartbroken, and many turned to Twitter to express their feelings.

"It has been a great and an inspiring journey, captaining a talented bunch of players in the RCB squad. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the RCB management, coaches, support staff, players, and the entire RCB family, who have been instrumental in the growth of the franchise over the years," Virat Kohli said in an official statement.

"It wasn't an easy decision but one that has been well thought of and in the best interest of this wonderful franchise. The RCB family remains close to my heart as we continue to strive to achieve excellence. As I have mentioned previously in many occasions, I will only play for RCB until my retirement from the game of cricket", he added.

On Monday, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, captained by Virat Kohli, will return to IPL action. In the second match of the UAE leg of the IPL 2021, they face Kolkata Knight Riders.

In what will be Virat Kohli's final season as captain, RCB players will undoubtedly go all out for the rest of the season to win the team's first trophy.

Before the tournament was postponed, RCB were in a great position in the IPL points table, having won five of their seven matches.
