Akshay Urja Day is also known as National Renewable Day. The day is observed on August 20, every year to raise awareness about renewable resources. The day also marks the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was born on August 20, 1944, in Mumbai (then Bombay).
The day is celebrated to educate people about the importance of renewable resources. The school and college children are the main target of the day as they are the future.
Akshay Urja Day 2021: History
The day was announced by the Indian Ministry for New & Renewable Energy Sources in the year 2004 and the first program was organized in the same year in New Delhi. The first program was inaugurated by the ex-prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh and to promote the renewable future a human chain of 12,000 students was formed.
Later the day was celebrated in New Delhi, Hyderabad, Panchkula and Haryana.

Renewable energy resources are an important source of energy as they renew themselves but due to some human activities they are in danger and would be exhausted in some years. To raise awareness and knowledge about the resources to protect the resources for our future generations the day is celebrated.

Renewable energy resources are resources derived naturally and replenish themselves in less than a human lifetime without depleting the planet’s resources. These resources include sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, biomass and thermal energy.
