In a major political development, Khalistan supporter and independent MP of Punjab Amripal Singh has announced that he will be contesting a by-election in Tarn Taran under his own political party, “Waris Punjab De.”

The announcement was made by Amrtipal’s father, Tarsem Singh, while talking to the media personnel on July 8, 2025, Tuesday. Before making this announcement, Tarsem Singh reached Gurdwara Sahib in the village of Jallupur Kheda with his son’s supporters.

It will not be the first time that Amritpal Singh will contest a by-election; earlier in 2024, he participated and won from Khadoor Singh and now is a member from this Lok Sabha seat.

What did Tarsem Singh say while addressing the media?

Amritpal’s father clarified that initially, there was no plan to contest the by-election as in the past as well; the political party has not given a seat to any candidate. But this time, the assembly seat comes under the Lok Sabha constituency Khadoor Sahib, from where Amritpal Singh won the election and currently serves as an MP.

He furthermore outlined that his son’s support and party experts urged him to contest the by-election and select a candidate for the position; however, as of now, the political alliance has not selected a person as a candidate for the seat but has assured that the name would be declared soon.

Along with this, he assured that the party will start campaigning in the upcoming days.

Why is Taran Tarn witnessing sudden elections?

Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal was the serving MLA, who unfortunately died on July 27, 2025, in a private hospital in Amritsar after fighting a battle with cancer. He died at the age of 66-year-old and attained the seat of MLA during the 2022 elections.

However, after his death, a by-election was expected to be held within the time span of six months
