Angelina Jolie debut on Instagram by sharing letter from Afghan teen, gets 4.5 mn followers in 14 hours

She voiced her concern for Afghans who are losing their ability to freely interact and express themselves on social media.

Angelina Jolie, a Hollywood actress, has finally joined Instagram and has acquired over 4.5 million followers in just 14 hours. Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's Chief Operating Officer, is one of her many fans.


The 'Eternals' actor, who is very upset by the happenings in Afghanistan, said she will utilise the opportunity to convey the views of many individuals living in the nation. She voiced her concern for Afghans who are losing their ability to freely interact and express themselves on social media.


"I’ve come on Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those across the globe who are fighting for their basic human rights," the 46-year-old Oscar-winning actress wrote.

Her first letter came from a teen Afghan girl who was afraid of living in the nation after the Taliban gained control. The young girl explained her problems going to school in the current scenario in the letter.


"We all had rights, we (were) able to defend our rights freely, but when they came, we are all afraid of them, and we think all our dreams are gone," the girl wrote.

The 'Maleficent' actress also recalled a 20-year-ago incident when she was on the Afghan border two weeks before 9/11, where she encountered Afghan refugees fleeing the Taliban.

"It is sickening to watch Afghans being displaced yet again out of the fear and uncertainty that has gripped their country. To spend so much time and money, to have blood shed and lives lost only to come to this, is a failure almost impossible to understand," she added in her caption.

Jolie described the Afghan refugees as "the most capable people on the planet," and said it is "sickening" to see them treated as a burden for decades. She believed that if they had the proper tools and respect, they might have accomplished a lot.

"Meeting so many women and girls who not only wanted an education, but fought for it," she wrote.


"Like others who are committed, I will not turn away. I will continue to look for ways to help. And I hope you’ll join me," she concluded her post.
Jolie's first Instagram post had over 1.5 million likes since her debut. 

She also posted a story on Instagram. She posted an image from her opinion piece in Time, "The People of Afghanistan Deserve So Much Better Than This," which depicted the horrific situation of women and children in Afghanistan.
