(Report by Ashish Puri) Police at Kotwali Police Station have registered a case of murder against seven prisoners and 16 undertrials in the case of a gang war that occurred in Kapurthala Modern Jail. The police have also included various charges in this case, including illegal weapons possession and assault. The police at Kotwali Police Station are preparing to record the statements of three injured undertrials who are currently undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital. Additionally, they are also analyzing the CCTV footage installed near the security ward and three barracks.
Hemant Sharma, the Assistant Superintendent at Modern Jail Kapurthala, lodged a complaint with Kotwali Police Station, stating that he received information from Warden Puran Singh, who was on duty at the jail's control room. The information stated that Raj Kumar alias Raju, a prisoner from Rayka Mohalla, Kapurthala, Vijay Kumar from Bakku Nangal-Jalandhar, Anu Kumar alias Anu and Arun Kumar from Angad Dev Kalan, Ludhiana, Ranjit Singh alias Raja from Chukhera-Jalandhar Dehati, Sajan from Lamma Pind Jalandhar, Kamalpreet Singh alias Kamal from Daroli Kalan Jalandhar, Kamaljeet Singh alias Kanwar Sam from Hoshiyarpur, Palwinder Singh alias Pindi from Harsha Chhina Amritsar Dehati, Rahul Kumar alias Rahul from Mitthu Basti Jalandhar, Surinder Singh alias Sindu from Jaloke Tarn Taran, Vikas Kalyan alias Nannu from Sat Nagar Jalandhar, and Tarsem Singh alias Jodha from Mirzapur Dhilwan,Undertrial Gurjeet Singh alias Mani from Noorpur Nakodar, Manish Prakash alias Bhajan Prakash from Modal Town Hoshiarpur, Gurjeet Singh from Miyaani Bahadur Sultanpur Lodhi, Tarsem Singh alias Sethi from Mikhovwal Begowal, Sukhvir Singh from Randhawa Barota Hoshiarpur, Suraj Singh from Mohalla Pir Dad Basti Jalandhar, Aman from Hoshiarpur, Sandeep alias Saabi from Dheerpur Kartarpur, prisoner Sanjeev Kumar alias Nannu from Malliyan Kartarpur, and Davinderpal Singh alias Bugga from Bhikha Nangal Kartarpur, along with their associates, gathered at Security Ward-E and Gate No.17 with iron rods in their hands to attack Simranjeet Singh alias Simar, a 28-year-old undertrial from Dheerpur, Kartarpur, involved in an old dispute.
Gang war in modern jail, four prisoners injured: One referred to Amritsar
These individuals attacked Simar in the ward, resulting in serious injuries to Simar and three other undertrials. They were immediately admitted to Civil Hospital. Due to the critical condition, Simar was referred to Amritsar, where he succumbed to his injuries. Consequently, Kotwali Police Station has registered a case against all the accused for murder, the Prisoners Act, and assault, among other charges. SHO Inspector Raman Kumar of Kotwali Police Station informed that the police have recovered five iron rods used in the murder. The CCTV footage from the incident location is currently being examined.
