In a major announcement by the Chandigarh Police Authority, high-tech HD cameras will be installed at the five most crowded intersected roads of the city. According to the reports, these cameras will be solely focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

The reports have claimed that this latest installation has been done to keep an eye on heavy traffic and to figure out the cause of any traffic jams or accidents. Expectedly, these cameras will help to improve the traffic system.

It is to be mentioned that the cameras will keep an eye on every type of vehicle, whether it is a bike, car, or truck.

How will the fault be detected?

The reports have claimed that these AI-equipped high-tech cameras will help in regular surveillance of the roads with high traffic across the city. A traffic police official said that its purpose is to prepare accurate and concrete solutions for traffic improvement. Due to this, any driver breaking the traffic rules will be identified.

Here are the five intersections identified for CCTV camera installation:

1. Tribune Chowk (Junction No. 38)
Connectivity: Links Mohali, Panchkula, and the Industrial Area.
Problem: Frequent traffic jams due to heavy trucks and trailers.
Proposed Solution: A fixed time window will be introduced for heavy vehicle movement. Additionally, a flyover or underpass is planned to ease congestion.

2. Hallomajra Light Point
Connectivity: Major route connecting Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh.
Problem: High risk for pedestrians and cyclists due to chaotic traffic flow.
Proposed Solution: Development of alternative routes and upgraded footpaths to enhance pedestrian safety.

3. Khudda Lahora – Khuda Jassu Road
Connectivity: Key access road from PGI to surrounding villages.
Problem: Narrow road width, roadside encroachments, and flooding during rains.
Proposed Solution: Encroachments will be cleared. New footpaths and U-turn facilities will be added to streamline traffic.

4. Housing Board Chowk (Manimajra)
Connectivity: This is a crucial route for vehicles traveling between Himachal and Haryana.
Problem: Buses often halt in the middle of the road, causing major traffic disruptions.
Proposed Solution: Construction of an underpass to connect Panchkula and Manimajra and reduce surface-level congestion.

5. Kajheri Chowk (Sector 52/53 and 42/43)
Connectivity: Close to ISBT-43, courts, and a busy market area.
Problem: Heavy vehicles use the same route as regular traffic, with no dedicated pathway.
Proposed Solution: Designated timings for heavy vehicle entry and a redesign of the traffic route to improve flow.

What is a PCU (Passenger Car Unit)?

The PCU of the vehicle depends on the size of the vehicle -

The unit for a bike is 0.5 PCU, and for a car, it is 1 PCU, and for big vehicles like buses and trucks, it will be 2.5 PCU or could exceed the unit.
