Explained: What is E-Shram portal, launched by Ministry of Labour?

The ministry of labour and employment has launched an e-shram card, which would provide several benefits for workers and labours. This card would be linked with the Aadhaar card of the labourer. As per the latest information shared by the ministry, more than 27 lakh unauthorized workers have been registered themselves on the e-shram portal. 

A few days back, the ministry of labour shared a video that provided the details related to the e-sharm portal and card. It tweeted, “Let's know about e-shram... What is e-shram? What is the eligibility for registration? What is the process of registration?”

E-shram card: How to register?

To register for the e-shram card the age of the worker must be between 16 and 59 years.  

Step 1: Go to the official website - eshram.gov.in.

Step 2: On the homepage, click on the link which read, “Register on E-shram.”

Step 3: Enter the mobile number link with your Aadhaar card and captcha code and then click on “Send OTP”.

Step 4: Enter OTP and all other required details.

Step 5: Enter the 12-digit Aadhaar card number. 

Step 6: You would be now successfully registered, check your card and download it. 

Step 7: Take a printout. 

If any worker does not have an Aadhaar card or mobile number, then he/ she can go to the nearest Common Service Centers (CSC) and can register through Biometric authentication. 

Every registered e-shram card would have a different Universal Account Number (UAN). 

To help the workers and labours with registration, the government of India has set up a toll-free number – 14434, where workers can get all the required information.

E-shram card: Benefits

  • This card would provide accidental insurance worth Rs 2 lakh, if due to an accident a worker dies or get permanent disability he/ she would get Rs 2 lakh and if he/ she gets partial disable then Rs 1 lakh would be credited. 
  • The UAN number on the e-shram card would provide portability of social security schemes, ration cards, etc., especially for a migrant worker. 
  • In emergency and national pandemic-like situations, this database may be utilized to provide necessary assistance to the eligible unorganized workers.
