The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways & Government of India exempted two-wheelers from toll charges across India to ease the financial pressures on lower-income road users, but currently, various posts have gone viral on social media claiming that people with two-wheelers have to pay toll tax and it will not be exempt anymore.
It is worth mentioning that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has offered prestige to motorcyclists and scooters. However, the latest claims on social media have claimed that this rule will be changed after July 15, 2025, and as per the rules, the two-wheelers have to pay charges via FASTag at all highway points.
Fact Check -
These viral posts were recently addressed by the Minister of Road, Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari - who denied the claims and outlined that these posts are spreading misinformation and the Government of India or the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways have not announced any such change.
He further appealed to the citizens and residents not to believe such information without proper verification. “Toll exemption for two-wheelers remains in full effect. No changes have been proposed”, the minister tweeted.
According to the reports, the people who travel via two-wheelers do not have to pay tolls on national highways, but the Road Ministry has declined access to several express highways, such as the Vadodara-Ahmedabad and Mumbai-Pune expressways.
The clarification came at the same time when the Government of India launched its new FASTag annual pass for automobiles that are used privately. This pass will go into effect on August 15, and it is promising to cover 200 journeys or one year of travel, whichever comes first, and it is not for buses but also just non-commercial vehicles, which includes cars, jeeps, and vans. Its FASTag annual pass could be activated through the Rajmarg Yatra app and the official websites of NHAI and the transport ministry.
