#FirstStoryPositive: College students turn teachers to help Jalandhar’s slum kids study

 “My life has completely changed after I started sharing my time and knowledge with children from slum areas, who otherwise have not much access to alternative education. Since the day I started giving them tuition, I am growing more in my professional and personal life”, said, Rajesh Singh, who along with his friend Shivangi have turned teacher for the slum kids.

From giving daily classes to the needy kids here near Laddhewali road and teaching them alphabets, counting etc, Rajesh and Shivangi are also engaged in making slum kids learn how to operate modern equipments like Laptop and cell phones.

Quoting that a chance encounter of Shivangi with the slum kids who were standing outside a book stall having a thirst in their eyes to gain knowledge, pushed them to volunteer to teach the needy kids, said Rajesh. He said this idea first stroke in the mind of Shivangi who then asked him to spare his evening time to give classes to the students.

Rajesh said, since past 4-5 months they are daily giving tuitions to the kids. He said, while there use to be only 2-3 kids at the start but over the time as many as 8-9 kids have showed interest in learning and gaining knowledge.

Rajesh further added that, I also go live on facebook while teaching the students so that the influential people in my contacts get an idea and may come forward to donate books or sponsor their studies. He also said that a few NGO’s in the recent past have contacted him and Shivangi to bring these children to their NGOs and we were offered job as teacher.

Shivangi said, “The children are basically from poor families, some of them are children of migrant labours, other belongs to the family of rag pickers or domestic helpers”.

They wanted to learn, to go to school but the helplessness of their parents who do not have enough money to pay their school fees is killing their desire to study, she added.

Meanwhile, appealing the youth of today that they should spend their time with such kids and share their knowledge by educating them, Rajesh said, “When we contribute towards changing the lives of others, our life too gets changed”. He said, since the day he has started working for this noble cause job opportunities and other offers are raining for him”. My life has become more positive and I remain peaceful now, he added.
