A few days ago, social media was flooded with the postthat an octogenarian helped a man to get a bed in the hospital in his fightagainst Covid-19. This 85-year-old man walked out of a Nagpur Hospital on April22 after he observed that a man in his forties requires his ICU bed to stayalive.

The octogenarian, identified as Narayan Dabhalkar was amember of a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS),noticed the plight of a patient who had tested positive for infection at theIndira Gandhi government hospital in Nagpur and decided to vacate his ICU bedamid the shortage. However, his voluntary decision to walk out for home was notappreciated by the medical team of the hospital as his oxygen level saw acontinuous dip.

It may be noted here that Dabhalkar took thisselfless decision after he saw the patient’s wife pleading to doctors to get himadmitted there for treatment.

Reportedly, the 85-year-old told the doctors,“I am 85. I have lived my life. Saving the life of a young man is moreimportant. Their children are young...please give my bed to them.”

The doctors however informed him about his unstable conditionand asserted that he needs treatment at the hospital. Adamant octogenarian calledhis daughter and made her aware of the situation and decided to leave thebed for a young man.

Later, Dabhalkar was brought home; perhaps, he could notlive for more than three days. Hours after his death, his daughter took tosocial media to pay gratitude to his late father and wrote, “We rushed him to IGR when his oxygen levels dipped on April22. We got a bed after great effort but he was back home in a couple of hours.My father said he would prefer to spend his last moments with us. He also toldus about a young patient,” Dabhalkar's daughter was quoted as saying by a mediahouse
