“It is with great sadness that Abu Dhabi Cricket announces that Head Curator, Mohan Singh, has passed away today.Mohan has been with Abu Dhabi Cricket for 15 years and has played a pivotal role in all of the venue’s success during that time.” A statement from Abu Dhabi Cricket said.

“Sunday’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super 12 game between New Zealand and Afghanistan went ahead as scheduled, with the support of Mohan‘s family and our groundstaff. Tributes to Mohan and his incredible achievements will be honoured in the coming days.

“Our thoughts are with Mohan’s family and we ask for media to respect their privacy at this tragic time.” They said.

The ICC has also condoled his death. An ICC spokesperson added: “We are deeply saddened and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, Abu Dhabi Cricket and everyone connected with the event.”

Mohan's body was discovered hanging in his room, according to UAE Cricket sources. 'Mohan Singh visited the ground and pitch in the morning,' a top official linked with the World Cup tournament reported. He left after speaking with us about the arrangements. People went to his room after he did not arrive at the ground on time. He was discovered hanging from the ceiling there. It's possible that he committed suicide.

'We have learned that he has been depressed for the past four months,' he said. The cause of this is unknown. We don't know if he consulted a doctor or not. Only once the police investigation is completed will we know if he committed suicide before the match.

Before relocating to the UAE in the early 2000s, Mohan worked in Mohali under the supervision of former BCCI chief curator Daljit Singh. Daljit, who has been a part of Indian cricket for nearly 22 years, was saddened to learn of Mohan's death.

'When he came to me, he was like a child,' he told a leading daily. He was a gifted musician and a diligent worker. He was a Garhwal resident. I recall him as a family man as well.

"After moving to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), he used to meet me whenever he travelled there," Daljit said, "but we hadn't met in a long time." He was gone far too soon. It's quite depressing.'

Shocked cricket fans paid respect to him after news of his death went viral.
