Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday took a dig at the Modi government over the appointment of Delhi Police Commissioner, Rakesh Asthana.

AAP supremo Kejriwal said that the appointment of 1984 batch IPS officer Rakesh Asthana is in violation of Supreme Court directions.

While talking to the media persons, Kejriwal said, “I feel the appointment of Rakesh Asthana is in violation of the Supreme Court directions. It is the duty of the central government to follow the directions of the Supreme Court and make appointments according to the directions of the Supreme Court and according to all the rules.”

“As per media reports, Asthana could not become CBI director as he was ineligible for the post. He is also not eligible for the post of Delhi Police Commissioner for the same reason. The centre should make the appointment as per the rules,” he asserted.

In Delhi Assembly session, issue of Asthana’s appointment was also raised on which the ruling party (AAP) slammed PM Modi led centre govt and claimed that the appointment was aimed at “harassing” the party leaders.

The Delhi govt has also passed a resolution against the appointment of former CBI officer Rakesh Asthana as Delhi Top Cop. Notably, the resolution seeks a reversal of his appointment from the Union Ministry, which controls the Delhi Police.

It is to be noted here, Mr. Asthana was named Delhi Top Cop on July 27, just three days before his retirement.

“Given the past track record of this officer, there is a reasonable apprehension that the central government will use him for foisting false cases on political rivals to create a reign of terror in the national capital. Such a controversial individual should be heading the police force in the country’s national capital,” read the resolution.

It has also been underlined in the resolution that the post of Delhi Police Commissioner is reserved for AGUMT IPS cadre.

“This appointment of a controversial Gujarat cadre officer, who has faced multiple inquiries on serious charges in the past, will only bring Delhi Police into controversies,” the resolution stated.
