
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday took adig at the Modi government over the appointment of Delhi Police Commissioner,Rakesh Asthana.
AAP supremo Kejriwal said that the appointment of 1984batch IPS officer Rakesh Asthana is in violation of Supreme Court directions.
While talking to the media persons, Kejriwal said, “Ifeel the appointment of Rakesh Asthana is in violation of the Supreme Courtdirections. It is the duty of the central government to follow the directionsof the Supreme Court and make appointments according to the directions of theSupreme Court and according to all the rules.”
“As per media reports, Asthana could not become CBI director as he wasineligible for the post. He is also not eligible for the post of Delhi PoliceCommissioner for the same reason. The centre should make the appointment as perthe rules,” he asserted.
In Delhi Assembly session, issue of Asthana’s appointmentwas also raised on which the ruling party (AAP) slammed PM Modi led centre govtand claimed that the appointment was aimed at “harassing” the party leaders.
The Delhi govt has also passed a resolution against theappointment of former CBI officer Rakesh Asthana as Delhi Top Cop. Notably, theresolution seeks a reversal of his appointment from the Union Ministry, whichcontrols the Delhi Police.
It is to be noted here, Mr. Asthana was named Delhi TopCop on July 27, just three days before his retirement.
“Given the past track record of this officer, there is areasonable apprehension that the central government will use him for foistingfalse cases on political rivals to create a reign of terror in the nationalcapital. Such a controversial individual should be heading the police force inthe country’s national capital,” read the resolution.
It has also been underlined in the resolution that thepost of Delhi Police Commissioner is reserved for AGUMT IPS cadre.
“This appointment of a controversial Gujarat cadreofficer, who has faced multiple inquiries on serious charges in the past, willonly bring Delhi Police into controversies,” the resolution stated.
