102 years of Jallianwala Bagh massacre: When British General Dyer killed thousands of innocents

In 1919, on April 13 the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre shook the whole nation and globe. On the occasion of Baisakhi thousands of people gathered at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab were fired by British soldiers.

The massacre took place in Amritsar 102 years from today. Hundreds of innocents were killed in the massacre. As per the reports listed by the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar 484 were martyrs. According to the unofficial figures, 1000 were killed and about 2000 were injured. This event is marked as the beginning of the end of the British rule in the country as the incident made a huge impact on freedom fighters. 

On the occasion of Baisakhi, the British officers played the Holi of blood with people who were gathered at Jallianwala Bagh for a meeting to protest against the Rowlatt Act. English officer General Dyer opened the fire on the crowd, he stated that 1650 rounds were fired.

People were killed, dead bodies were laid on the ground. There was corpse on the top of each. Many were killed in the stampede itself. After viewing this scene panic was created among the present crowd, women and children jumped into the well to save their lives. As the firing continued for 10 minutes and around 1650 rounds were fired, the well was also filled with about 120 dead bodies.

Revenge was taken after 21 years  

Udam Singh, who was present at Jallianwala Bagh during the time of the incident, took revenge by killing General Dyer in London in 1940. He went to London to kill General Dyer. He was sentenced to death by London court and was hanged in London prison on July 31, 1940. 

The impact of the massacre was also seen on the thinking of 12-year-old Bhagat Singh. After the incident, the desire to gain independence increased not just among the children of Punjab but also among children of the whole country.

Traces of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in Bollywood

Some of the Bollywood movies highlighted the Jallianwala Bagh. The directors, producers, and other artists of Bollywood created some of the films to reach the masses. Some of these movies are: ‘Jallian Wala Bagh’ which was released in 1977, ‘Rang De Basanti’ was released in 2006, it showed the part of Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Black and White, and ‘Legend Bhagat Singh’, the movie was released in 2006 and showed the struggle of Bhagat Singh and his mates.    

Many personalities paid tribute to the people who martyred in the incident, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM tweeted, “Tribute to those martyred in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Their courage, heroism, and sacrifice give strength to every citizen.”
