Eyeing Punjab assembly elections, expected to take place in March next year, AAP national convener and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, on Tuesday, announced to provide 300 units of free power to every household in the state.

Announcing a slew of pre-poll sops during a press meet in Chandigarh, he said here that his party will provide uninterrupted round the clock power supply and waiver of pending electricity bills, if his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) forms the next government in the state.

"It will take three-four years for us to upgrade the infrastructure, and then we will be able to provide uninterrupted power supply," he said.

The chief minister said, with the provision of 300 units free electricity to every household, 77-80 per cent households will get zero bills.

Taking a jibe at Congress leader and chief minister Amarinder Singh, he said it was surprising that Punjab "makes its own electricity, still is the most expensive in the country".

He said in Delhi his government provided 200 units of free electricity to every family. "The women are very happy. Women in Punjab are also very unhappy with inflation. The AAP government will also provide free electricity in Punjab," he added.

It was believed that free electricity in the national capital was one of the key reasons behind AAP’s return to power for the third time in 2020.

Meanwhile, this is Kejriwal’s second visit to Punjab in the last 15 days. Last time when Kejriwal visited Amritsar, he promised that AAP’s CM face will be from Sikh Community besides Captain Amarinder Singh’s confidant Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh then joined AAP in his presence.

Experts say if Kejriwal manages to get a popular Sikh Face, the party will give a tough fight to its opponents in the next elections. Also, he is leaving no stone unturned to woo voters and this free electricity announcement is just the start, they said.

Sources further informed that Punjab CM has been facing criticism over electricity rates in Punjab and despite big poll promises to make electricity cheaper in the state, nothing concrete has been done so far.

Also, not in the mood to repeat the mistakes from last year's assembly elections, Kejriwal seems quite prepared. He has already started social engineering and brought CM Captain Amarinder’s confidant to his party. It is also expected that Kejriwal in the coming days will make announcements related to Sand, Liquor and Drug mafia in Punjab.
