Carlo Ancelotti named his strongest starting XI possible, with Marco Asensio returning to the right side of attack in place of Rodrygo Goes, and David Alaba a surprising selection after suffering a slight knee injury in the midweek Champions League match against Sheriff.
Real Madrid got off to a lethargic start, and Sevilla were well worth their early 1-0 lead when Rafa Mir, unmarked and with all the time in the world, drove a header into the net for a 0-1 Sevilla lead.
Just minutes later, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was called upon to make a save to deny Rafa Mir a second goal, eliciting more worried muttering from the Bernabeu throng.
With the exception of a Vinicius attempt that Bono saved, Real Madrid continued to sleepwalk, and Lucas Ocampos was unlucky not to score when his curling right-footed effort slammed off the crossbar.

Real Madrid were sluggish to begin the second half, preferring to sit back and let Sevilla move the ball around, but they came alive when Asensio sent a shot just wide of the post.
Although an Alaba volley came near to winning the game, it was Vinicius's spectacular shot that sealed the victory. The Brazilian took a cross-field ball from Militao and ran with it, jinking past a couple of Sevilla players before slamming a right-footed attempt into the top right corner of the net to seal the 2-1 win.
