'Law of land Supreme," new IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaws warns Twitter

Ashwini Vaishnaws has started his work from the place where his predecessor, Ravi Shankar Prasad, has left off. He has warned social media giant Twitter and has urged it to follow new IT Rules. He warned Twitter by saying, “Law of the land supreme law.”

This warning is release amid the tussle between the Central government and Twitter over IT Rules 2021. Twitter has not yet appointed a Grievance Officer, who is an Indian citizen. 

Earlier today, Justice Rekha Palli of the Delhi High Court has said, “How long does your process take? If Twitter thinks it can take as long as it wants… I will not allow that.”

The company replied that it needs a period of eight months to appoint an India-based Grievance Officer.

Who is the new IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaws?

Ashwini Vaishnaws has an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and has graduated from India’s top engineering college. He is a former IAS (from batch 1994) and the bureaucrat-entrepreneur-turned-politician. 

As an IAS officer, he has handled many important responsibilities for more than 15 years and was popular for his contribution to the public-private partnership (PPP) framework in infrastructure. 

He has earned an MBA and an M.Tech degree and now will handle two important portfolios of Minister of Communications and Minister of Electronics and Information Technology. 

On Thursday, after taking the oath, he took Twitter to thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and wrote, “Took charge as Cabinet Minister of Railways today. Once again from the core of my heart, I extend my gratitude to Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi Ji for entrusting me this responsibility.”

“Assumed the charge of Minister of Communications at Sanchar Bhawan today,” said New IT Minister.

In the new Cabinet, 43 ministers were inducted along with the elevation of seven ministers of states. The sworn-in ceremony took place in the Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan on July 7 in which 28 leaders took oath as ministers of states. A total of 15 Cabinet ministers including some new faces were also inducted. This took the overall strength of the Union Cabinet to 78 including the prime minister.

The latest revamp has also brought 7 more women faces as ministers of state. These include Karandlaje, Darshana Vikram Jardosh, Lekhi, Annapurna Devi, Pratima Bhoumik, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, and Anupriya Singh Patel. With this, there are a total of 11 women in the Union Cabinet including Nirmala Sithraman, Smriti Irani, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti and Renuka Singh Saruta.
