Ludhiana: Husband, in-laws sexually assault, harass woman for not fulfilling luxury car demand as dowry

The victim’s in-laws were upset because their dowry demands were not met.

A woman from Ludhiana was allegedly assaulted and harassed by her husband and in-laws after their dowry demands were not met. The man accused of the crime is based out of Delhi was charged on Saturday along with his family. 
 
The woman was subjected to repeated assault and harassment as her family could not give an S-Class Mercedes in dowry. Reports said that the accused had demanded a luxury car in the dowry which the woman refused. Angry at not receiving the car, the woman’s in-laws threw her and her two sons out of the house.

However, after some time that woman had met the accused to settle the issue but they had demanded Rs 50 lakhs from her. The accused then allegedly strangled the woman using her dupatta and locked her inside a room and sexually assaulted her after which she became unconscious and was taken to the hospital. 
 
The woman got married through a marriage bureau in 2003, reports said. The woman alleges that soon after the marriage, she was being harassed by her husband and in-laws for dowry. Despite the woman’s parents providing the accused with expensive gifts in the form of gold and silver, they didn’t stop the harassment.

Investigating officer, Sub-inspector Amritpal Singh said that teh accused has been booked under relevant criminal sections such as Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), 354-A (sexual harassment), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 506 (Criminal intimidation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 34 (act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). as the accused has been charged an enquiry has been initiated to arrest all the accused at the earliest.
