In a big development, Model Town Police of Jalandhar has taken custody of Brijesh Mishra of a humongous visa fraud case involving more than 700 Indian students who were taken to Canada based on forged job offers.
As police authorities stated, Mishra was on their radar since the scam was exposed two years ago. He is accused of swindling students with crores of rupees after giving them fake admission letters to Canadian educational institutions. The scam was undone when a number of the students were deported after finding out that the validity of the documentation was not true upon verification by the Canadian authorities.
After the outcry, Mishra escaped to India, not getting arrested, and escaped to India. He has had as many as nine cases registered under various sections against him, and a Look Out Circular (LOC) had also been issued to ensure that he did not escape.
Recently, immigration officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport intercepted Mishra as he tried to leave the country again. He was arrested and later handed over to Jalandhar Police, which returned him to the city on Monday.
The police submitted Mishra before the court, where he was remanded for seven days to facilitate further interrogation. Authorities have verified that he is the mastermind of the scam, and they are questioning him so that other people involved in the racket will be identified and arrested.
According to the officials, a number of the affected students were deported due to fake papers submitted by Mishra. Inquiries are ongoing.
