Business-news Analysis Reports

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has been in limelight in past few months for its new privacy policy after reports emerged that it would breach the user’s data.

Refuting all the claims again, WhatsApp has now announced that May 15 is no longer a deadline for the users to accept the terms and conditions of the new privacy policy. Also, it will not lead to the deletion of the users' accounts.

Earlier, the company had to face severe criticism as the users were concerned and in fear that their data is being shared with the parent company Facebook.

Clearing the air, WhatsApp has informed the media agency that no accounts will be deleted on May 15 if the users won’t accept the privacy policy update.

"No accounts will be deleted on May 15 because of this update and no one in India will lose functionality of WhatsApp either. We will follow up with reminders to people over the next several weeks," the spokesperson said in an emailed response to a query on Friday.

The spokesperson further added that while a "majority of users who have received the new terms of service have accepted them", some people have not had the chance to do so yet.

However, the company has not clarified the reason behind the scrapping of deadline and has also not disclosed the number of people who have generously accepted the latest terms and conditions so far.

Earlier in January, WhatsApp informed the users about the update in its privacy policy through an in-app notification. Initially, users were given time till February 8 to accept the news terms and conditions if they wish to enjoy using the platform. Later, its policy landed in controversy and the company had to push the dates further.
