The first half of the finale season of Netflix’s world-famous series ‘Money Heist’ was aired and devoured by fans in a matter of hours. The cryptic death of Ursula Corbero’s role, Tokyo, has sent fans into a dizzy state. In the final moments, the military breaks in and shoots her down. Then we see Gandia hovering over her with a gun pointed at her head. Before he fires, Tokyo smiles at him and we are shown a closeup of his hand which has a pin to several grenades that are strapped to her body. The audience is left to assume that Tokyo is dead and had taken Gandi down with her in the last episode of this part as it ends with a bang.

The question remains: Is Tokyo really dead?

The question hangs in balance as the second part of the finale season is slated for a December 3rd release. A straightforward answer might be a probable yes, Tokyo is dead. This can be concluded from two things: First, the last episode of part 5 was filled with flashbacks from Tokyo’s past, life before heists and what let her meet the professor. The intensity of this backstory leads to the fact that whenever a character’s past flashes, something bad is going to happen to the character. Secondly, her surviving the blast means defying physics and logic which the show has never dared to do. The grenades were tightly strapped to Tokyo’s body and if they exploded, then she also did.

Tokyo was the only character on the show who held the narrative as a ‘protagonist’. The audience viewpoint was mostly created through her. Her narration, her character and how she saw the heist was pivotal to the show. The question lingers, would the makers dare to kill the ‘protagonist’? The answer might be a yes. However, before Tokyo’s death, she makes a statement to the Professor (Alvaro Morte) when he insists on her jumping down the dumbwaiter: “You’ve always been my guardian angel.” In season 3, when Tokyo said this line, Professor thought Lisbon was shot dead. The scene shows everything going haywire, Professor and Raquel are separated and he yells at her to share the location through his mic and she refuses. Then the Professor hears a gunshot, which indicated that Lisbon was dead. He calls Tokyo and she says “Professor. You’ve been my guardian angel. Now it’s my turn," and tells her about how Lisbon died to protect him.

The realisation dawns upon Tokyo that Lisbon might not be dead as they don’t have a visual confirmation and explains that what they heard is not real. She explains that her mother called her but the police were hiding in the kitchen. If not for the professor stooping Tokyo, she would have been dead. After this conversation, Professor realises that Lisbon is not dead. With Tokyo repeating the same line in Season 5, her death became a mystery.

According to Express UK, her death is confirmed. They report that when the scene was filmed, Corbero kneeled and cried in the kitchen where Tokyo just died. “Let’s say goodbye to Ursula," the director allegedly added as applause erupted on the set of the Netflix drama.
