Nangal Gas Leak: 25 school students hospitalised after difficulty in breathing, probe team formed

On Thursday, chaos and panic broke out after a gas leak was reported from a factory in Nangal.

While Punjab is still seeking answers from the Ludhiana Gas leak which killed 11 people in the state, another similar incident occurred in the state but this time in Nangal of Ropar district in Punjab. On Thursday, chaos and panic broke out after a gas leak was reported from a factory in Nangal. As per reports, 24 to 25 schoolchildren were rushed to the hospital after they complained of difficulty in breathing. The school-children belonged to Center Soldier Private School which was built near the factory from where gas was allegedly leaked. After students complained about uneasiness in breathing, and headache, they were rushed to Nangal Civil Hospital. Reportedly, one of the students who was a girl was referred to PGI Chandigarh. As per reports, a total of 2400 students were present in the school when the incident took place.

As soon as the incident of the Nangal Gas Leak came to the fore, senior Police officials and Ministers reached out to the sports including- Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains, Ropar's DC Preeti Yadav and SSP Viveksheel Soni. As a precaution, the area was sealed and several health officials with ambulances were deployed on the spot. Reports suggest that 300 to 400 were present at the spot where the gas was leaked. As of now, relief work is going at the spot. It is pertinent to mention here that Ropar Deputy Commissioner Preeti Yadav said the source of the gas leakage was being traced. Apart from this, local MLA and Education minister Harjot Singh Bains reached the hospital and said the condition of all the students was improving.

Furthermore, Ropar's DC Preeti Yadav informed that the administration has formed a committee to investigate the cause of the gas leak. Apart from senior officers, experts from the Pollution Control Board are also included in the committee. This committee has been asked to complete the investigation as soon as possible and submit the report. As per DC Ropar, the situation is now under control.

It is pertinent to mention this here that panic prevailed in Ropar as Punjab recently face deadly gas leak incident in Ludhiana that claimed 11 lives. Eleven people including three children died after allegedly inhaling toxic gas in Ludhiana's densely populated Giaspura locality, with high levels of Hydrogen sulphide detected in the air and authorities suspecting that it emanated from a sewer. After the tragic incident, a five-member Punjab Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) was set up to investigate the Giaspura locality gas leak. Furthermore, teams of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) were also probing the cause source of hydrogen sulphide gas leaked which claimed 11 lives in the city. Not only this, the National Green Tribunal on Tuesday had directed the Ludhiana district magistrate to give Rs 20 lakh each to the families of the 11 people who died allegedly after inhaling toxic gas in the Punjab city.
