
On the 7th of August, India would celebrate the seventh National Handloom Day. The day is celebrated to honor the handloom weavers and to promote handmade and handwoven things. On this day, the contribution of this sector is also highlighted.
The date, 7 August, was selected by the Prime Minister because on the same day Swadeshi Movement was launched in the year 1905, which was based on the ideology of Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

Every year, handloom day is celebrated with a special theme, and this year the theme of the day is – “Hand Loom – An Indian Legacy.” This year, the celebration of the day would revolve around this theme.

To raise awareness about the handloom industries and hand-weavers, the Modi Government announced August 7 as the National Handloom Day in the year 2015. The first Handloom Day was celebrated on 7 August 2015, day was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centenary Hall of Madras University, Chennai.
August 7, was selected for the day because on the same day Swadeshi Movement was launched in the year 1905 in Calcutta Town Hall. The main objective of this movement was to revive the value of domestic products in the market.
National Handloom Day 2021: Significance
Handloom and textile is the second-largest source of employment in India, after agriculture. Handloom is a symbol of India’s glorious cultural heritage.
In India, Handloom is a great source of income and employment among women as according to the surveys, 70 percent of the handloom weavers are women.
According to the reports, India is the world’s second-largest cloth manufacturer, after China. India contributes 6.9 percent to the world’s cloth market.
