Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has targeted the newly appointed Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu for the congratulations received from Pakistan. The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (PSGPC) has congratulated Sidhu with a tweet on being elected to the President of PPCC.

Navjot Singh Sidhu has come under attack from the opposition parties for the congratulations received from Pakistan on becoming the President of the Punjab Congress. The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (PSGPC) has congratulated Navjot Singh Sidhu on becoming the President of the State Congress. Congratulating Sidhu through a tweet, PSGPC has also appealed that Sidhu should play an important role in the reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor. Shiromani Akali Dal and Punjab BJP have raised questions on this.

Registering a strong objection over the tweet, BJP state president Ashwani Sharma said that this script of the tweet has reportedly been written by Sidhu himself. The corridor was constructed after the intervention of the centre government and will open only on the decision of the centre government.  “This is a matter between the two countries and Sidhu has no role to play in this,” he added.

Shiromani Akali Dal spokesperson and former minister Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema said that congratulations can be given to anyone, but PSGPC should keep in mind that opening of Kartarpur corridor is a matter between two countries and Sidhu did not and cannot have any role in the opening of the corridor. Shiromani Akali Dal demands early opening of the corridor from the Modi government.

Notably, in the coronation ceremony of Navjot Singh Sidhu becoming the state Congress President, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had called Pakistan a threat. The Captain had said that Pakistan shares 600 km border with Punjab and we also have to take extra care of the security of the country. Pakistan sometimes sends weapons through drones and sometimes intoxicants.

Significantly, on the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor, Navjot Singh Sidhu had gone to Pakistan on the invitation of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan and had given a hug to Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa. The incident had attracted a lot of criticism of Sidhu in India.
