
Indian Navy is the naval branch of the Indian Armed Forces and to honour the Navy men and to recognise the role and service of the Indian Navy, India celebrates Navy Day on December 4. December 4 was chosen because the day marks the launch of Operation Trident against Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan War in 1971.
Navy Day 2021: Theme
Every year, the day is celebrated under a specific theme and the theme for 2021 is “Swarnim Vijay Varsh”. This year’s theme would commemorate the 50th anniversary of India’s victory in the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971.
Navy Day 2021: Background
On the evening of December 3, 1971, Pakistan attacked the Indian airbase. In response, India launched Operation Trident, under which they sent three missile boats – Nirghat, Veer and Nipat, towards Karachi at maximum speed. During Operation Trident, the Indian Naval Force sank four Pakistani vessels.
During this day, martyrs of this operation are also remembered.
