PM Narendra Modi launches National Vehicle Scrappage Policy, urges youth to join & invest

PM Modi said that the national vehicle scrappage policy would bring in an investment of around Rs 100,000 crore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, launches National Vehicle Scrappage Policy and said that the policy is a significant milestone in the development journey of India. He also urged the youth and start-ups to study and invest in the policy as well as to join the program. 

Prime Minister took Twitter to inform the nation about the launch of the scheme. His tweet read, “Vehicle scrapping will help phase out unfit & polluting vehicles in an environment-friendly manner. We aim to create a viable circular economy & bring value for all stakeholders while being environmentally responsible.” 

He further tweeted, “The launch of Vehicle Scrappage Policy today is a significant milestone in India’s development journey. The Investor Summit in Gujarat for setting up vehicle scrapping infrastructure opens a new range of possibilities. I would request our youth & start-ups to join this program.”

Earlier on Thursday, the information related to the launch of the National Vehicle Policy was shared by the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. Union Minister said that Prime Minister would launch the policy during the “Investor Submit for Setting up Vehicle Scrapping Infrastructure” in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. 

During the virtual address at the Investor Submit, Prime Minister Modi said that the Policy may bring in an investment of Rs 100,000 crore and Alang in Gujarat can become the vehicle scrapping hub of India. 

PM Modi further said that the current method of scrapping is not effective and productive, the new policy would be a step toward the development of the nation. 

 The meeting was attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and he said that the policy would help in making the nation an automobile hub. He also said that testing centres would be set up in all districts across the country using the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

Giridhar Aramane, secretary in the Road Transport and Highways Ministry separately stated that the policy would be first implemented on government-owned vehicles and then on heavy vehicles and later, the policy would work on personal vehicles. 

He said, “We propose to scrap vehicles, which are 15 years and over, owned by the Central and state governments by April 2022. From 2023 onwards, heavy commercial vehicles need to be scrapped if they do not conform to the fitness level prescribed under the rules. For personal vehicles, we plan to implement this from June 2024 onwards.”
