Police discover hand-grenade in Amritsar’s residential area, bomb squad rushed at spot

Barely a kilometre from where Captain Amarinder Singh is expected to visit Amritsar tomorrow on August 14, an explosive was discovered causing a stir among the police department and the surrounding area.

A hand grenade has been discovered outside a house in Amritsar's residential sector, Ranjit Avenue today, just days before the 75th Independence Day. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad has been dispatched to the scene and the matter is under investigation.

Barely a kilometre from where Captain Amarinder Singh is expected to visit Amritsar tomorrow on August 14, an explosive was discovered causing a stir among the police department and the surrounding area.

Allegedly, a sweeper was cleaning in Ranjit Avenue D-65 when he found a hand-grenade like object and got suspicious following which he immediately informed the police around 8:45 am.

The top officers, Commissioner Dr Sukhchain Singh, DCP Mukhwinder Singh, and outpost in-charge Robin Hans were rushed to the scene with the force and seized possession of the hand grenade as soon as the information was received. After being crushed in a sandbag, the grenade was sent to be examined.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Dr Sukhchain Singh held a meeting with officers after the incident instructing them to maintain a close eye on every corner in the view of August 15 celebrations.

DCP Mukhwinder Singh told the media that the pin of the grenade has come out which indicated that the device was deployed solely to create panic in the state.

Meanwhile, a team has been formed to examine the CCTV installed in Ranjit Avenue in order to identify who placed the grenade here.

Earlier, Amritsar police had recovered a tiffin bomb, five hand grenades and three detonators from the area near the Pakistani border. Following the discovery of these explosives, a warning was issued throughout Punjab.
